Sudan Appeal on Track
The British Red Cross Sudan Crisis Appeal has raised more than £200,000. The
money will pay for shelter and other essential household items for up to 20,000
families in Darfur in western Sudan.
The head of national fundraising says "The response from our donors
has been fantastic, and our online donations continue to be very encouraging".
Among those who have donated to the appeal is the Freemasons' Grand Charity,
which has given £10,000.
The acting trusts fundraising manager describes the special relationship
between the two charities. She says: "Whenever there is a big humanitarian
emergency such as the one in Darfur, the Freemasons' Grand Charity is my first
port of call as they are committed to alleviating human suffering".
The Red Cross, led by the International Committee of the Red Cross and the
Sudanese Red Crescent, was one of the first humanitarian organisations to
respond to the emergency after the outbreak of the conflict in February 2003,
and has already provided assistance to hundreds of thousands of people.
