At the meeting of the Standing Committee of the Provincial Grand Charity held at Derby on 11th December 2003 two grants were approved:

The first was a contribution of £250 towards the provision of a memorial window at St. Michael’s Church, Breaston, in memory of Bro. Canon W. Pemberton who had been rector for forty years and a prominent member of Fairfield Lodge No. 2224, who had pledged a similar amount.

The second grant of £500 was made to the Braille Chess Association, being the cost of providing prizes at their Annual General Meeting to be held in Derby during March 2004.

Three members had received assistance from the Albert Wilson Fund, to enable payment of their Lodge subscriptions while they are suffering financial difficulty.

The Masonic Music Foundation also approved two grants, one of £1,000 to Burbage Band, Buxton, to enable the purchase of a cornet for use by young members of the band who number more than half of the total membership, and one of £501.45 to the Parents, Staff and Friends Association of Ashgate Croft School, Chesterfield to purchase basic instruments for children with severe and multiple learning difficulties.

Other News

The Provincial Treasurer, W. Bro. Eric Mitchell, presented copies of the latest financial position of the Provincial Grand Charity which showed a continued reduction in interest receipts.

He reported that he had written to every Lodge Secretary with a copy of the recently approved annual accounts, together with a list of non-Masonic donations, in order that all brethren could be made aware of the information distributed at the Annual meeting which was poorly attended. He was very disappointed to find that Secretaries were only making reference to his letter, rather than reading it in full as requested. If you wish to have more information please ask your Lodge Secretary for sight of the letter.

He referred to the interest of about £70,000 earned on the Harold Litchfield bequest of which £48,000 had been spent on the provision of the Ashbourne St. John ambulance. He suggested that a bladder scanner for St. Oswald Hospital costing £5,000 be purchased out of the balance, which was approved, subject to the receipt of a formal request from the Hospital.

A discussion took place on applications submitted by four Hospices serving parts of the Province, but none were considered to meet the criteria of major capital schemes. Further applications are awaited, following the payment of the approved grant of £30,000 to Ashgate Hospice, which is anticipated early in 2004.

The future direction of the Derbyshire Circle was discussed and W. Bro. Brian Evangelista, the Provincial Secretary, reported that he had received offers of assistance from two brethren to become new members of the editorial board. Future production would take place at the Provincial Office and a report will be prepared on the relationship between the Derbyshire Circle and the Provincial website.

Please remember to nominate any deserving brethren or dependants for the Masonic Holiday in Bournemouth during July, reported in the last edition.

Graham Sisson
Secretary of the Provincial Grand Charity
