PROVINCIAL GRAND CHARITY NEWS

A meeting of the Standing Committee of the Provincial Grand Charity was held at the Masonic Hall, Derby on Wednesday 9th February 2011 under the Chairmanship of W. Bro. Brian Quartermain.

The meeting was attended by the Chief Executive of the Derbyshire Community Foundation, following an approach to invest Provincial monies in a “Named Fund” under the Grassroots procedure which enables investors to receive an equivalent amount of Government funding. She answered a number of questions following which the Committee agreed to invest a sum of £100,000 thereby enabling the Provincial Grand Charity to receive a further £100,000 to assist Derbyshire charities.

The Treasurer presented a Profit and Loss Account and Balance Sheet to date and advised that miscellaneous income from all sources amounted to about £20,000 together with projected proceeds from the 2010 Carol Service of a further £2,000. Seasonal Relief and other grants paid amounted to £9,000 leaving around £35,000 in hand. The Balance Sheet indicated that around £122,000 was currently available to spend.

The following grants were approved :-

The Petitions Sub-Committee had earlier approved grants totalling £620 from the Albert Wilson Fund to meet the cost of Lodge subscriptions for four needy brethren while an emergency loan of £500 had been made to assist a Lodge widow, to be recovered later from a Grand Charity petition.

The Provincial Almoner, W. Bro. Brian Jones, reported on certain items of information relating to the national Masonic charities and their support for Derbyshire brethren and their families.

Following the closure of Lodge St. Peter there are now 27 unattached Lodge widows who had each received a Christmas card and gift from the Province.

The Secretary, W. Bro. Graham Sisson, reported that a cheque for £1,000 had been sent to the Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance as a donation from the 2010 Carol Service.
