Masonic details pertaining to Brethren are obtainable from the Lodge secretary and some personal details from regular attendees are usually available. But do you know, for example, about children with persistent illnesses or disabilities ? After that it becomes even more difficult. These days, telephone numbers often change. Non-attendees may not advise the Secretary of a change in address, assuming that all their friends will know anyway. Personal problems of the elderly and frail will change from time to time. Elderly widows often change their addresses, perhaps moving to a remote district to be with relations. They are frequently hesitant to write to the Almoner in case it might look as if they are seeking “Charity”. The Masonic local Ladies' organisations are generally a fund of information about widows and wives with problems. In cases of bereavement or burglary they are often quicker off the mark than the Almoner. They are a tremendous help. Those with access to and who are familiar with, computers will find a database very suitable for these records. They are not expensive and when once established are easy to operate. For those who prefer more conventional methods, a single book will suffice. Each Almoner will have his preferences but anyone requiring help or advice should contact the Provincial Almoner or the Provincial Office.
