It is some years now since the idea of semi formal organisations of Masonic wives and widows was first thought of in this Province. It was judged that details of the organisation would vary from place to place and this has proved to be the case. Enthusiastic groups of Ladies now meet regularly in many parts of the Province. Your Provincial Almoner visits them occasionally, not enough to intrude but sufficient to be able to assure you that all is well.

Some have a coffee morning, some afternoon tea, some a luncheon. Coach trip visits, luncheons and dinners are arranged. Some help to run and fund their local Masonic Hall.

They meet monthly, bi-monthly or when they feel like it. Regular meetings are held in Burton, Chesterfield, Derby, Dore, Matlock and Ripley. Other less formalised meetings are held from time to time.

We do not solicit or expect donations but they are all aware of Masonic Charities and from time to time have made contributions.

In many instances, where the existence of the local association has not been well publicised, widows have been sought and encouraged to take part with much success. Many Lodge Almoners have provided or arranged transport where this was required.

Not surprisingly, bearing in mind the close relationships, very swift support has been given in cases of sudden distress. Liaison with the Almoners is very important.

Generally, the Ladies are pleased with our liaison but two items need attention -

The publicising of Ladies' activities to the wives of new members of the Lodge has not been very good in the past but is improving.

The provision of our Provincial “Freemasonry Cares” cards to all widows, wives, partners, mothers and dependants from Lodge members varies between adequate and abysmal. There have been many instances of distress where the card has been invaluable and its regular up-dated distribution must be a matter of importance.
