The Provincial Treasurer reported on the financial position of the Provincial Grand Charity to the end of December 2004. He advised that the value of investments had increased by £50,000 since the beginning of the financial year on 1st July 2004.
However, due to commitments and earmarking of funds only £7,000 was available for use until the end of June 2005. Care had to be taken, therefore, to control expenditure pending the receipt of Lodge targets which had so far proved disappointing.
Further information on the status of Lodge contributions was provided by the Provincial Charity Steward, W. Bro. John Renshaw. He reported that so far £23,000 had been received against a potential total of £62,000, representing 37% of the overall target. 16 Lodges had donated at their target figure, 6 above their target and 7 below, a total of only 29 Lodges out of a possible 79.
The Provincial Almoner reported on the successful Seminar for Almoners and Charity Stewards held on 14th October 2004 to which approximately 100 Brethren had attended.
He also reported on the formation of a formal liaison with the British Legion and assistance provided at Christmas jointly with Help the Aged for the delivery of Christmas parcels to widows.
In view of the increased costs of renting space at Bakewell Show and the moderate return shown from the last two years it was decided that there should be no representation at the 2005 Show.
A paper was circulated showing the contributions made by the Grand Charity to the Asian Tsumani Appeal, which indicated that £135,000 had already been sent direct, with substantial donations of over £140,000 having been received by Grand Charity from Lodges and Brethren.
A meeting of the Advisory Committee of Lodge Charity Stewards and Almoners followed in the afternoon at which an attendance of around 50 members was recorded.
In addition to discussing matters reported from the two earlier meetings the brethren present determined that no financial support should be given to the Derby University Buxton Campus project.
The Chairman, W. Bro. Brian Quartermain, reported on the latest position of the TLC scheme and it was agreed that it should be extended to any other hospitals within Derbyshire which had A&E Units, as well as providing support for the present paramedic scheme.
The Chairman reminded members that this was the last meeting to be attended by R.W. Bro. David Law in his role as Grand President of the Provincial Charity and thanked him for his help and support during his term of office.
