PROVINCIAL CHARITY NEWS
A
meeting of the Provincial Grand Charity Standing Committee, chaired by W. Bro.
Brian Quartermain, took place at Derby on 25th April 2006, preceded
by the Petitions Sub-Committee which approved the payment of Lodge
subscriptions for eight brethren in need, together with financial assistance for
medical treatment for the wife of a brother.
The
Standing Committee approved eight grants to non-Masonic charities as
follows :-
 | £300 to the Fingertip Braille Group in support of an application submitted by the
Ancient and Accepted Rite. |
 | £500
to the Cavendish Centre, Sheffield to be added to a grant of £1,000 donated
by Chantrey Lodge to this charity providing supportive therapy and care to
cancer patients. |
 | £400
to the County Air Ambulance. This is to be added to a donation of £1,100 made by
Bretby Lodge
and is to be submitted for support from the Grand Charity (see below) to
increase the total donation to £3,000. |
 | £250 to the Derbyshire Association for the
Blind to be added to a similar amount donated by
Engineers’ Lodge.
This will also be submitted for additional funding of an equivalent amount.
|
 | £250
to Derby Toc H Children’s Camp to contribute towards the costs of an annual
holiday under canvas for deprived children. |
 | £532.16
to Ashgate Croft School, Chesterfield to purchase musical instruments for special needs children, to be added to
those already funded by the Provincial Grand Charity in 2003. |
 | £500
to Scropton Riding for the Disabled Centre, a charity providing horse riding and
pony trap driving for disabled people. An application will be made to the Grand
Charity to double the contribution. |
 | £300
to a member of the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain to take
part in a European Tour in the summer of 2006. |
A
major grant of £18,000 (maximum) was approved for structural conversions to a
building at Thornhill House, a hospice based in Great Longstone.
The Provincial Almoner, W. Bro. Brian Carter, reported that a survey of the 67
former beneficiaries of seasonal relief had revealed that there was no evidence
of hardship in 56 cases while 11 cases were in receipt of some form of
assistance from the Grand Charity. It was agreed that those cases who continued
to qualify for assistance would receive a single annual in November of each
year.
The Secretary reported that Derbyshire is to benefit from a pilot scheme introduced
by the Grand Charity which provides funds totalling £5,000 for donations made
to charities of a national nature by the Province. Applications must be
submitted by October and every effort will be made to maximise the use of the
available funds.
