PROVINCIAL CHARITY NEWS

A meeting of the Provincial Grand Charity Standing Committee, chaired by W. Bro. Brian Quartermain, was held at Derby on 9th January 2007, preceded by the Petitions Sub-Committee which approved the payment of a grant to the widow of a former Lodge member, to enable her to receive urgent dental treatment, unavailable under National Health facilities. The Sub-Committee also authorised the payment of three Lodge subscriptions from the Albert Wilson Fund, to enable the brethren to retain their respective Lodge memberships.

The Standing Committee approved five grants to non-Masonic charities as follows :-

bullet

£2,000 to the John Eastwood Hospice Trust, based in Mansfield but serving the North-eastern parts of Derbyshire, in support of a similar donation made by Morcar Lodge.

bullet

£100 to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal to match a similar grant made by High Peak Lodge.

bullet

£100 to the Royal School for the Deaf, Derby to assist in providing training in deaf signing to families of deaf children.

bullet

£2,000 to the Riding for the Disabled (Mid-Derbyshire), based in Tansley, to help with the provision of an outdoor riding area.

bullet

£5,000 to the Edale Mountain Rescue Team to assist with the costs of refurbishment of their base premises in the Hope Valley.

The Provincial Almoner, W. Bro. Brian Carter, advised that he intended to arrange a seminar for Lodge Almoners in September, details of which will be circulated when final arrangements have been made.

The Secretary, W. Bro. Graham Sisson, advised the Committee that a member of Sure and Stedfast Lodge had published a book on Friendships and intended to refer to Masonic connections. He proposed to make a donation to the Provincial Charity from the sale proceeds.

The Secretary also reported that the Province had received matching grants from the Grand Charity in the sums of £500 to the Scropton Riding for the Disabled Centre and £1,500 to the County Air Ambulance, in support of grants already made by individual Derbyshire Lodges and the Provincial Grand Charity.

The Chairman reported that the first cheque valued at £431 had been received under the Coins for Cash project initiated by W. Bro. Bernard Eyre. He stressed the importance of supporting this simple but worthwhile project.

W. Bro. Joe Clark reported on the 2006 Carol Service and advised that 33 Lodges had still to return their carol sheet sale proceeds but that he anticipated a small shortfall in total income compared with the figures for 2005.
