Sadly, over the last few decades, times have changed for the worse and there is much more with which an Almoner needs to be involved. Above all else, it is evident that the job is too much for one man, even if he has the required time, money and skills. The Almoner must be the leader of his Lodge’s charitable outgoings; the focus of their combined efforts. With eighty Lodges in the Province there are many variations on the theme but the principle is clear. The Lodge, through its Almoner, must detect the need and deal with it as quickly as possible, tactfully and with discretion. Continuity is vital. This requires not only records which are accurate and up-to-date but also a known deputy or successor. Keeping track of a dozen or so elderly (and independent) widows, as well as perhaps a similar number of elderly non-attending Brothers is no easy task. Charity is, of course, far more than just the provision of money although that is rather important when you haven’t any. Roses pruned for an arthritic, a shopping expedition for someone with no transport, advice with a problem or just someone to talk to. These relatively simple tasks need time but above all, those with the time must be made aware of the opportunity to help. All these matters are not just tasks to be executed for the needy and unfortunate. They are a normal manifestation of a caring society which derives pleasure and satisfaction from helping those in need. cont |
