It is obvious from the introduction and job specification that the office of Almoner is demanding and onerous. To the newcomer it may well seem impossible in its demands and frightening in its responsibilities. The potential Almoner may wonder who can take on the job from him after his reasonable (say 3 - 5 years) term of office.

It is not a one-man job either practically or philosophically. Talents and time required include;

bullet

The ability to form and maintain an up-to-date register or Database for all concerned. The initial compilation is not too difficult, but keeping it so as to be of any future use is demanding.

bullet

A bed-side manner to give comfort to the sick and companionship to the lonely. This may well be required at a time and in circumstances quite inconvenient to the Almoner.

bullet

A sharp brain and tact to discuss sensitive matters with embarrassed people too proud to readily admit needing money or any other help.

bullet

Persistence to continue where the need for help is perceived, and a willingness to involve someone else who for reasons of age, sex or just remoteness, may be able to help in that instance.

bullet

An understanding, (with perhaps a register or filing system) of where to go for the type of assistance needed at that time.

bullet

The ability to obtain and prepare applications for help so that they are most likely to succeed.

bullet

System and tenacity to monitor the progress (or lack of it) of all current items.

The Almoner must have the ability to involve many Brethren to get each job done quickly and properly, allowing the Lodge itself to derive satisfaction from their efforts. This wide involvement must not affect total confidentiality where it is required.
