Flyfishing at Yeaveley Estate on Wednesday, 23rd June 2004, with Students of Alfreton Park Special School.

Despite the weather conditions on the day, everybody who volunteered to attend this event turned up nice and early as requested, and were met with a hot snack and a drink,  which was all down to the fantastic cookhouse operations of John Mitchell and his trusty staff, Meg Worthy, Thelma Key, and Bron Duxbury.

The day started with an excellent demo for all concerned from Charles Jardine, who had agreed to come, but due to other commitments had to leave at 11.00.am; we all enjoyed his presentation, even some of us, I hope, may have benefited from it.

The Students arrived, and after they had had a drink, were suitably dressed, and paired off with their carer and caster, then made their way to the lake to commence fishing. What really surprised a number of the members was the amount of concentration the Students gave to the casting and retrieving. Very little fish were seen in the morning so at about 12.30. Lunch was taken by everybody.

Thanks to David Bowen, a Fire engine appeared with a crew of four, and caused a great attraction for the Students, also I would like to thank Tony Wollett, Clown and Magician, who circulated during the morning amusing one and all, after which it was back to the lake for some more fishing.  A roar was heard from the lake as the first fish of the day was caught and landed, and duly photographed together with the caster and catcher.

Casting and retrieving continued until it was time for the Students to leave for home, but not until due presentations were made of a Certificate of Achievement to each Student which were presented by Tom Briggs, and a medallion for the best fish, best caster, and best retriever which were presented by Ken Hasler from the M.T.S.F.C., who had been judging the Students during the day.

We had tremendous support from the Estate, namely Guy Field.  I cannot see how we can better the location and all its facilities. Once again, thanks to John Mitchell and his little band of helpers, who kept us fed and watered all day. Thanks to all the members of Flyfishers, Derwent and St.Oswalds Lodges who ensured that it was a day to remember for the Students. Not forgetting the members of the Lodge, and their friends, who could not attend but made donations to the fund for a future event at Yeaveley Estate. Photographs of the day were kindly taken by Bob Lee and Ken Hasler, proofs will be circulated, but if you are interested please contact either Bob or myself.

I have to mention John Wright who donated the baps and Jerry Howarth who supplied the burgers.

I have since received a letter of appreciation from the Head of Alfreton Park Special School, together with a letter from each Student; these are being copied and will be forwarded to you all in due course.

Thank you all again,

Sincerely and Fraternally, Bob Duxbury. (Gone Fishing)
